I recently finished the book cover for Katrina Leno's "Horrid," which is set to release on September 2020 by Little, Brown and Company. It's a contemporary horror novel that explores the darker sides of mental illness, rage, and grief. The story follows Jane North-Robinson as she moves back to her mother's dilapidated, old childhood home in Maine. In hopes for a fresh start, what she ends up finding are hardship, family secrets, and a locked "storage room" not meant for storage at all.
I worked with AD, Karina Granda, on this cover who offered me extremely sharp and encouraging art direction. Without giving too much away, we came up with the above concept of the mysterious black roses and its encroachment onto a fair-haired figure. Read the book to truly understand the meaning behind it.
